Books

Secrets of Closing the Sale – Zig ZiglarSales is the most important skill in the world regardless of what profession you are in. This book provides invaluable strategies in the form of specific closes, hundreds of sales questions and key persuasion techniques that will help everyone sell themselves along with their products, services, and ideas.

Ca$hvertising – Drew Eric Whitman — If you could buy just ONE book on copywriting and marketing, this is the one. Read, take notes, and apply them to write killer copy that will sell.

Charlie Munger: The Complete Investor – Tren Griffin — If you are new to investing this is definitely one of the best and most readable books covering how to invest long-term in the stock market. This book is excellent for those who want to overcome the emotional side of investing like tackling FOMO (fear of missing out) and understanding Mr. Market.

The Complete Financial History of Berkshire Hathaway – Adam J. Mead — This is not a book you can just skim through. It is an exhaustive walkthrough of Warren Buffett’s financial decision-making over the course of half a century and is tantamount to reading and analyzing fifty plus years worth of Berkshire’s annual reports. The book is very accounting-heavy but is an excellent tool for learning accounting if you have never taken any college-level courses on the subject. It is expensive but well worth the price if you keep it on your shelf as a lifetime reference for value investing.

You Can Be a Stock Market Genius – Joel Greenblatt — Grab a pen and highlighter and be prepared to scribble all over this book. This is without question the best book on security analysis of all time. The book goes over how to effectively apply fundamental analysis using the Graham investing style without having to compete against teams of research analysts who have more time and resources than yourself. However, it is not a book for beginners. If you are a newbie we recommend reading the essays of Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett first.

The Intelligent Investor – Benjamin Graham — Graham is the mentor of Warren Buffett and this book is one of the best books out there on Graham Value Investing. Once again, this is not a beginner’s book. Buy the paperback and treat it like a college textbook. Draw, annotate, scribble, take notes, etc. Yes, this book was published in 1949, but don’t listen to those who call it outdated. The principles still apply and are as relevant as ever.

The Zurich Axioms – Max Gunther — This is an investment book that does not offer any concrete techniques for picking stocks or investments. However, it does touch upon the money management & risk management side of things and also addresses the mental aspect behind long-term investment success. A good book to begin with for novices.

Investment Banking – Joshua Rosenbaum & Joshua Pearl — We have had the opportunity to meet Joshua Rosenbaum back when he was promoting his book. The guy is extremely charismatic and is now MD at RBC Capital Markets. This is a great book for anyone who is looking to break into investment banking. You can use it to prepare for job interviews and also to learn to build each of the valuation methods in Excel as an intern or junior analyst. The training package set consists of the hardcover main volume book, a workbook (400+ problem-solving exercises and MCQs with detailed answers) and a focus notes book summarizing the content of the main volume. Also included within the main volume is downloadable access to five valuation model templates.

Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training – Mark Rippetoe — This book describes in incredible detail the compound lifts (deadlift, squat, bench press, power clean, and overhead press). You will notice tremendous results by following the program and taking care of yourself (eating well & sleeping well). There is also a beginner’s program included in the contents. DO NOT buy the Kindle version. Some books are better on paper and this is definitely one of them. The paperback book is fantastic with clear pictures and fancy diagrams, while the Kindle one is very hard to follow with small diagrams and misaligned text and pages.

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 – Travis Bradberry — Do not purchase a secondhand copy of this book as the access code will already be used and is no longer useful to anybody. With that said, the value of this book is obvious: you need high EQ in order to succeed in life. Read this book and apply its principles if you want to increase your EQ.

A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy – William B. Irvine — Adopting a stoic practice will teach you to think more clearly and rationally, reduce your anxiety levels, and learn to make the most efficient use of all available resources. You will also learn to care less about what other people think of you. In short, you will be much happier.
